We’ve been selling a lot of flat diapers lately. When I take phone orders, I usually ask the customer about the choices they are making. One customer ordered a few diapers a couple of months ago and liked them so much she called back to order three dozen more.

• “Are you using pins or Snappi or anything else to secure the diapers?” I asked.
• No, she just uses a snug cover.
• “What do you like best about them?”
• Absorbency. She folds them in four (first the long way, then across) and tucks the rectangle into a cover.

This is so different from the way I used flat diapers with my children, shaping them in an hourglass and adding another layer down the center. It’s just a plain rectangle. You can fold and bunch it any way that works for your child. And, size is less an issue than with fitted diapers.

The great thing about flat diapers, the biggest selling point in my opinion, is the use of only 100% organic cotton for every part of the diaper, including the thread. No elastic or plastic snaps.

So tiny they fit in your hand.

Quite a few years ago, before we began the diaper manufacturing adventure, a friend of mine gave birth to her baby more than four months premature. I still remember visiting him in the NICU, his bottom as big as a tangerine. He was as healthy as a 4 1/2 month-baby could be, but she ran into one problem that she passed on to me: find diapers because nothing fits.

The two of us had lived on the same street and cloth diapered our first babies together using exactly the same flat diapers. She knew I would get diapers she would like. I figured, how difficult could it be? Finding preemie cloth diapers was difficult. I found no fitted diapers, no flat diapers, and in the end I produced a pile of wash cloths as diapers for her 4-lb baby. The wash cloths worked, though the covers were much too big. The baby didn’t move around much, so he just had to put up with the giant covers.

The problem of preemie cloth diapers stayed with me. Once I began designing cloth diapers, I knew I needed a size small enough for a premature baby. The Firefly Diapers Extra Small is the result.

We are so happy to see our shelves bursting with new diapers in a big rainbow of organic cotton colors. It has been a while since Firefly Diapers has stocked quite so many colors at once in Quick Dry Color diapers.

Why use color diapers? Obviously, color doesn’t have anything to do with function. Color is about feeling. I feel happy when I am surrounded by colors. If I smile when I change my baby’s diaper, my baby smiles back at me. The papa of Firefly Diapers suggests (after one too many home decorating shows) that colorful cloth diapers should be marketed as a decorative element for babies’ rooms. I’m not sure I would go that far, but I do love to see that rainbow of color when I walk into our stock room.

We make these low-impact dyed colors available in our three most popular sizes — Small, Medium, and Large. Available colors vary between the sizes, but (as of writing) there are still colors across the spectrum available in every size.
