Use a Large diaper as a changing table cover or under a sleeping newborn. Fold Small diapers to use as doublers in fitted or flat diapers. Even use cloths and wipes as doublers.

Pins? Not necessarily. You can simply fold a flat diaper in a well-fitting cover without pinning. Sometimes a snap-under T-shirt can help prevent sagging at the bottom when you don't pin.
